João Bittencourt is a professor and researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL, Brazil), where he also works on undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in Sociology and Social Anthropology. His Phd was defended in 2011 at UNICAMP (University of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil) and focused on the development of the straight edge scene of the city of São Paulo and its consolidation in the youth lifestyle. He is Coordinator at the research group LABJUVE (Laboratório das Juventudes) and is member-founder of the REAJ network (Network of studies and research on youth actions and experiences). He has been a member of PSN and coordinator of PSN Brazil since 2020 and nowadays works in the following areas: Sociology and Anthropology of Youth, Sociology and Urban Anthropology, Sociology and Anthropology of the Body of Emotions. His most recent research has focused on urban youth cultures, with special attention to punk and straight edge. He has published two books Sóbrios, firmes e convictos: uma etnocartografia dos straightedge em São Paulo (Annablume, 2015) and Juventudes Contemporâneas: desafios e expectativas em transformação (Telha, 2020).
